A young man approached me today and asked if he could speak with me. He wanted to know why he cannot stop sinning. How do I answer such a question? Well, I start with assessing who he is trusting in for eternal life.
Me: If you were to die today and God asked, "Why should I let you into my heaven?" What would you say?
Young Man: I would say that I am working on my sin and I am trying to do better.
If you have read about my previous encounters, you would recognize the red flags. He is trusting in himself. I told him that I wanted to help him and then asked, "Who was the only one that you mentioned in the answer to your question?" The look on his face made it clear that he realized his situation. Once I shared the gospel with him, I informed him that born-again believers are not immune to sin. We will still sin, but it will not be in an habitual manner. I could have continued with how the Holy Spirit gives us the power to say no to sin, but I thought it would be best if I kept it simple. I could tell by the look on his face that he had a lot to think about, plus I know that I will see him again. Towards the end of the day he approached me and thanked me for talking with him. I closed my eyes and thanked the Lord for another opportunity.
